GDCS Committee

We registered as a charity!

Following some months of initial conversations about the potential for a renewed Grampian Deaf Children's Society to make a difference for deaf children, children of deaf adults and their families - this was the day when it finally became official!

We have been fortunate to be supported by the National Deaf Children's Society on this journey and recognise the positive impact and legacy of the previous incarnation of this charity which ran between 1992 and 2003.

Kiltwalking for the GDCS

We were bowled over by the number of people who walked both the 'wee wander' and the kiltwalk - raising in total over £5,000 which has gone towards support our initial program of events!

If you'd like to get involved in the 2026 Kiltwalk, taking place on the 7th June 2026 - registration is now open!

Raising awareness by speaking to STV News

One of our committee members Sandra Stark, took the time to speak with STV News about her families story and the intention for the Grampian Deaf Children's Society to provide community and connection for deaf children, children of deaf adults and their wider families and support networks.

Our Launch Event

From games, to a bouncy castle, to baking - there was lots of fun to be had on our launch day at Airyhall Community Centre.

The day was a great chance to have a good time and meet others with a connection to the deaf community across Grampian.

Ten-Pin Bowling in Garioch

Our First BSL Classes

We were grateful to receive a grant from the National Deaf Children's Society to run our first set of British Sign Language (BSL) classes.

Over the course of seven weeks, we ran two classes on a Saturday morning:

  • One class for Preschool children and their families
  • One class for children in Early primary and their families

Classes were taught by BSL teacher Mags McNulty who engaged all who took part with a combination of stories, songs, games and discussion.

Mags' passion for craft  and creativity really brought things to life!

Visiting the Pumpkin Ranch

What better way to enjoy fresh autumn air than to get outside in the Inverurie Pumpkin Ranch?

A Home For Hamish

We were mesmerised by A Home For Hamish which was a colourful, immersive and interactive adventure for young audiences aged 4-7 and their families.

Playfully merging dance and British Sign language in a sensory world, A Home for Hamish follows the story of May and their imaginary friend, Hamish the Haggis as they travel across Scotland to find a perfect night’s sleep.

The Stickman

Taking the time to add signing to a performance can improve the accessibility of all sorts of performances to those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

We are really grateful to Susan Mair from Aberdeen School For the Deaf taking the time sign this beloved story by Julia Donaldson.
