💬 Communicating with Deaf Children – Simple Tips That Make a Big Difference
At Grampian Deaf Children’s Society, we believe every child deserves to feel understood, included, and confident in communication. Here are some helpful tips for connecting with deaf children:
✨ Get their attention first
Gently wave, tap their shoulder, or move into their line of sight before speaking.
👀 Face them clearly
Make sure your face is visible and well-lit so they can see your expressions and lip movements.
🗣️ Speak naturally
Use a normal pace and tone—shouting or exaggerating words can actually make things harder to understand.
🤟 Use gestures and visual cues
Pointing, facial expressions, and body language can support understanding.
📝 Be ready to adapt
Writing things down, using drawings, or using apps can help if something isn’t clear.
⏳ Be patient and positive
Give them time to respond and don’t be afraid to repeat or rephrase.
💙 Learn some sign language
Even a few basic signs can go a long way in building connection and trust.
Every child communicates in their own way—what matters most is making the effort to connect.

I’m really excited to be delivering a Deaf Awareness session at my daughter’s school tomorrow 😁The school had the brilliant idea to use Deaf Awareness Week as an opportunity to educate the children and help them develop a better understanding of deafness and communication — which is fantastic.I feel incredibly honoured to have been invited to deliver an assembly and support the activities they’ll be taking part in this week, including designing their own hearing aids, trying the lip reading challenge, and exploring hearing technology. It’s so important that we create inclusive, understanding environments for all children 💛
